Elmira is the seat of Chemung County in south central New York, just north of the Pennsylvania state line. An important transportation and manufacturing center dating from the Civil War, Elmira has lost about half of its population in the last 50 years, and a lot of its original industry as have other parts of the country, but remains the headquarters of the Anchor Glass Container Corporation, a major international producer of bottles and other containers, and one of the few industries left in Elmira. As the home of Elmira College, one of the oldest, private liberal arts colleges in the country with a rich history in women's educational equality, the town benefits from the largest Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) archive in the world.
Elmira also offers a number of unique museums, including the Union Civil War Prison, the National Soaring Museum on Harris Hill where the sport of gliding was originated by a couple of adventurous pilots in the 1930s, and the John W. Jones Museum named for the former slave who served as the Underground Railroad Station Manager, helping hundreds of slaves to flee to Canada, as well as campaigning for the dignified burial of Confederate soldiers. The Elmira area is served by the Elmira - Corning Regional Airport (ELM), and locally by the Chemung County Transit System which also connects with neighboring county transit systems. Standard chain hotels are available throughout the Elmira area, particularly around Elmira College, but the more interesting lodging options are north of Elmira where the Finger Lakes region begins, and where bed and breakfast lodges are the perfect starting point for exploration of a wine region second only to Napa Valley.
